A photo of a cast iron skillet filledwith tater tots topped with melted cheese, sour cream, peppers, onions, tomatoes and scallion.

In my house, long before the game starts, the food and drinks are flowing. One of our game day favorites is my cast iron skillet Loaded Tater Tots. How can you go wrong when there are tater tots, cheese, and bacon involved? It is a golden heap of deliciousness that is sure to be a fan favorite. Let’s get cooking.

Prep time: 7 min  ·  Cook time: 18 min  ·  Ready in: 25 min  ·  Skill level: Novice

Ingredients

  • 2lbs of frozen tater tots
  • 6 slices of thick cut bacon
  • 1 cup of shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 small tomato
  • 1 small red onion
  • 1 smal bell pepper
  • sour cream
  • 1 scallion stalk

Method

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees. Place the tater tots into a cast iron skillet (or oven safe pan). Bake for 7-8 minutes then turn the tater tots over and bake for an additional 7-8 minutes.

While the tater tots are baking, prepare the bacon. Start with a cold frying pan, turn the stove to a medium heat and fry the bacon until crispy (not burnt). Remove the bacon from the skillet and put it on a paper towel lined plate. The paper towel will help absorb the excess oil.

Chop the bacon and scallion (separately) and set them aside. Then, wash, dry and dice the tomatoes, onion, pepper.

Once the tater tots have finished baking, top them with shredded cheese and place them back into the oven for 2 minutes. Remove the skillet from the oven and top the tater tots with sour cream and all of the other toppings.

Sit back, relax and enjoy the game.
